Italian flag carrier Alitalia Airlines announced it will operate a weekly flight every Sunday on the Mumbai-Rome-New York route with utilising a modified Boeing B777 passenger aircraft.

Alitalia had been operating a daily passenger service between Rome and New Delhi with an Airbus A330 aircraft since 2018 till the suspension of the international air services due to COVID-19 pandemic. The carrier on June 21 operated its maiden cargo-only passenger flight uplifting 45 tonnes of cargo from Mumbai to Rome and then to New York.

Considering the current situation, Alitalia has curtailed its domestic as well as international services. At present, the carrier is operating scheduled flights to few intercontinental and short-medium haul destinations, both domestic and international. This includes limited flights to Buenos Aires, New York and Boston, besides Mumbai. Cargo charter solutions are also available, using the passenger aircrafts’ belly capacity, while some special flights are organised on a spot basis.
