GMR-led Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), which operates Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad has been honoured with Platinum Accreditation in the 15-35 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category under the Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2020 by Airports Council International (ACI), in recognition of its efficient water management practices.
The prestigious recognition conferred upon the airport on the World Environment Day is the outcome of the submissions made this year which focusses on the airport’s water management approaches such as waste-water treatment, water harvesting, recycling and reduction.
The jury panel highly appreciated the water sustainability project at RGIA through using the 4Rs concept of reduce, reuse, recycling and replenishment.

In addition to deploying water conservation measures all over the airport complex and surrounding areas, Hyderabad Airport has set up efficient sewage treatment plants.
The airport has a large reservoir with a water-holding capacity of 6,00,000 cubic meters, which is sufficient to meet the considerable quantum of airport’s requirement throughout the year.
Apart from a 40-acre recharge basin, the airside contains 10 artificial recharge wells. Recently, Hyderabad Airport installed India’s first cloud-based automatic irrigation system across the 80 acres of landscape spread along the 8.4- km stretch of the airport spine road.
ACI’s Green Airports Recognition programme promotes environmental best practices to minimise aviation’s impact on the environment and recognises members for outstanding accomplishments in their environmental projects.
