DHL Express Germany and Munich Airport (FMG) have concluded a contract to build a new freight building at Munich Airport; the only Skytrax Institute certified “5-Star-Airport” in Europe. The new building will be built on the site currently occupied by the car parks P80 and P80 West and will have a gross floor area of more than 8,000 square meters. For the first time, the partners signed the contract digitally, reflecting the current restrictions. DHL Express will plan, construct and operate the new building on land leased from FMG. Currently, the company has access to the freight center as a tenant of warehouse space. The start of operations at its own location, which will be six times bigger, is scheduled for 2022.
The new building will have a direct airside access and two pick-up and delivery (PUD) fingers, where up to 65 delivery vehicles can be dispatched simultaneously. This gives a time advantage, particularly to clients in the south of Germany. Furthermore, the new station will meet all safety requirements of the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA), and will obtain the globally recognized TAPA Class A certification, the highest security level in air transportation.
Markus Reckling, Managing Director DHL Express Germany said, “After we had modernised and expanded our service center in Unterschleißheim for 13 million euros last year, the new gateway is our next step in realising our infrastructure plan. This is a clear commitment to our presence in the Munich region. Even in economically difficult times we invest thoroughly in our customer service as one of our main priorities.”
Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers appreciated DHL Express’ decision to continuously support growth at Munich Airport. “This is an important signal in such difficult times for the air freight industry and a symbol of trust for the location in Munich. The strong engagement of DHL Express will sharpen our profile as a logistics location and set significant impulses for air transports.”
